Department of Strategic and Defence Studies
The Department of Strategic and Defence Studies is an instruction and research unit for strategy, international co-operation and security policy.
The department is responsible for all teaching in its field at the National Defence University. The instruction focuses on Finland’s security policy and the most important factors influencing our military-political position. The department also offers post-graduate studies leading to a doctoral degree in military sciences.
The research conducted at the Department contributes to the development of the instruction given, to long-term planning in the Defence Forces as well as to decision-making in defence and security policy.
The Department has contacts with Finnish and international research institutes and foreign defence universities and colleges, and it arranges international research seminars. In addition, the Department of Strategic and Defence Studies and its researchers provide expert opinions for the authorities and the media. The department also publishes research conducted by its staff and outside researchers. For this purpose the department has four publication series. A publication committee reviews all the manuscripts submitted before their publication.
