Presentation of The National Defence University
The National Defence University was founded in January 1993. It provides the training required for commissioned officers' positions. It is subordinated the Chief of Defence. The National Defence University is led by its Commandand the Rector.
Officers who have graduated from the university are assigned to various wartime and peacetime tasks in the Defence Forces and the Frontier Guard.
Studies leading to an officer's examination are carried out in the Military Academy (First Degree Division). The students of the Postgraduate Degree Division aim to take the senior staff officer's or the general staff officer's examination. It is also possible to take a doctoral degree in military science.
The National Defence University has seven departments. The major fields of study and research are operations skills and tactics, leadership and education as well as military technology, war history and strategy.
The National Defence University's Central Library as well as the Military Museum guarantee that information services and research material in military science are available. A former part of the NDU, Finnish Military Archives, has joined the National Archives as of 1st January 2008.
The university is in charge of duly preserving the traditions and history of the Finnish Defence Administration and Defence Forces for future generations. Due to this, also the Finnish Defence Forces Photographic Center is part of the organisation.
